In recent years Thailand has enjoyed a remarkable rise in the number of tourists coming to visit this fascinating and beautiful country.
Thailand has been discovered, and hordes of travellers are now flocking to experience the diverse culture, friendly people and delightful beaches for themselves.
Despite this rapid increase in tourism, there are still villages in the Northeast of the country where things have changed little for hundreds of years.
Join the author during his unexpected six-month sojourn in Northeast Thailand. Meet farmers, fishermen, spirit doctors and Thai boxers and share in his misadventures as he comes to terms with the warm community of a rural Isaan village.
Sometimes hilarious, often touching, occasionally tragic - but never dull - this book takes the reader into the heart of the Northeast, and provides an insight into a traditional way of life and a culture that is fast disappearing.

Blundering Around Isaan A Village in Northeast Thailand eBook Peter Jaggs

A reasonably interesting read although Peter Jaggs' stories do not ring true. There is no explanation how a young man from the UK, only recently arriving in the country, could end up in Isaan either speaking fluent Thai or finding a village where a large number of the local people could speak fluent English. Even in Bangkok, where I would assume a higher proportion of Thai people speak English, communicating with Thai people is difficult. He relates a story of buying a pet bird that has been tied by its leg to stop it flying away. The result is a broken, lifeless leg. Tying a matchstick to the leg to act as a splint results in a fully healed leg with no sign that it was previously broken. This I find difficult to believe, in fact I do not believe the story. Peter Jaggs has obviously spent time in Thailand and understands the people and the culture. The book though I believe is fiction, not fact as he would like us to believe.

Blundering Around Isaan A Village in Northeast Thailand eBook Peter Jaggs Reviews

This book was a great read. Jaggs is a gifted teller of stories. I will be buying his other books.
I enjoyed this book and often wondered how it would be to stay in an area as outlined by the author. I enjoyed the writing style and honesty of feeling expressed.
very nice
I thoroughly enjoyed this read. It gives an accurate snapshot of rural Thailand and complex characters of how life in Isaan is lived. The people, the culture, the kindness and most of all the humour.
A charming story of the author's stay in a small Thai village, focusing on his efforts to make the most of his time there and to fit into the community despite sticking out like a sore thumb. A great slice of life story reflecting rural Thailand, told with obviously fond memories of the many memorable people and places.
Just felt like I was robbed. He goes to Thailand for a holiday and ends up in Isaan where he is left to fend for himself in a rural village. Miraculously either everyone in this village speaks English or he can speak fluent Thai after a few weeks in Thailand hanging out with bar girls and expats in Pattaya. Either he left a whole lot of the story out or it is just nonsense. None of this book rings true to me or my Isaan family. Obviously he has spent time in Thailand but that's about the only thing that is true here.
Truth be told, I had no idea what to expect out of this book and as luck would have it...found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable read! The author did a great job of humanizing (for lack of a better word) the people of rural Issan.

Pretty great story how he ended up in Ban Lek vs. running home like most folks would after a catastrophic incident like his in Pattaya. His initial mishap has no doubt happened dozens of times and sent folks packing for good with ruined vacations.

Character development was good and not drawn out or left to guesswork...you got a sense of who all the people were and their different mannerisms/personalities. I finished the book with a good sense of respect for the hardworking people in the village. I'm sure it must've been an almost alien experience living in a world without modern technology, but that makes you respect them all that much more given their simple (but hard) and efficient lifestyle. Helps you understand and makes more sense why the daughters of Issan head to the neon lights of the big city. Think it was said best at some point in the book, something to the effect of...the girls going off to work are more or less Issan's social security system. I can definitely see that.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I've always wanted to see where all these absolutely gorgeous stunners in the bars, gogos, etc. come from (Issan)...but was never convinced that I'd bother making a trip from Pattaya to a village for the sake of taking a look. I'm envious the author took on the opportunity to live amongst the people by invitation and really got a sense of community through his experience...awesome!

Having traveled to Thailand for several years/several times a year...after reading this book, I feel like I really don't know anything about Thailand...not the REAL Thailand like the author does.

Their is no shortage of books containing mongering adventures and what not, but this isn't one of them. This is a book about discovery, community, comical antics, the people of Issan and reflection...basically a book with some actual substance. Long story short...this is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it!

*Disclaimer* I do NOT know the author, NOR am I giving a buddy a good review to help book sales. It's simply an enjoyable book!
